Why the timing matters

Medicare gives you a 7-month window around your 65th birthday to sign up. Miss it without other qualifying coverage and some penalties stick with you for life.

3 months beforeYour Initial Enrollment Period opens. Signing up now usually means coverage starts the month you turn 65.
Birthday monthStill in the window. This is when most people realize how many decisions there are.
3 months afterThe window closes. After this, enrolling in Part B late can mean a 10% higher premium for each full 12 months you went without it, for as long as you have Part B.
